Checksums help detect whether a downloaded file was altered, corrupted, or replaced with a malicious version.

The process is:

  1. The software publisher calculates a checksum—such as SHA-2-256—from the original file and publishes it through a trusted channel.
  2. You download the file and calculate its checksum locally.
  3. You compare the two values:
  • Matching checksums result: The file is most likely content-identical to the publisher’s file.
  • The results show different checksums: The download may be corrupted, incomplete, tampered with, or maliciously replaced, so you should not install it.

A checksum does not remove malware or actively prevent an attack. It protects you by revealing that the file is not the expected one, allowing you to discard it before running it.

When used correctly, checksums let developers and advanced users confirm that software downloaded from the internet is authentic and hasn’t been altered. To verify a download, follow these steps:

1. Download the software from the vendor’s website or an authorized mirror.  
2. Before running the software, locate the vendor’s published checksum on their website (this is often on the download page).  
3. Note the checksum algorithm the vendor published (for example, SHA-256 or another hash algorithm).  
4. Add the downloaded file to the “List of Files” tab in Checksum-Aide and compare the computed checksum shown there to the vendor’s published checksum.  
5. If the checksums do not match, do not install the software. Delete the file and contact the vendor.
